Cold email that gets replies

Lesson 2 of 8 · 8 min

Build a list worth emailing

The list is the highest-leverage part of cold email and the part people spend the least time on. A tight list lets you write specifically, which is the only durable advantage you have over automated spam.

Qualify on a trigger, not a category

A category is "ecommerce brands." A trigger is "ecommerce brands that just launched a subscription option." Triggers give you a reason to be writing today, which is the hardest thing to fake.

  • They just raised, hired for a role, or opened a location.
  • They shipped something you can see and comment on specifically.
  • They are visibly doing the thing you fix badly, and you can prove it.
  • They asked a public question you can answer.

Find the right person

Send to the person who owns the outcome, not the person who owns the task, and not the CEO of a 500-person company. Owner of the outcome means their bonus or their calendar is affected by the problem you fix.

Verify every address before sending. Bounces are the fastest way to wreck your domain reputation, and a 5% bounce rate can undo months of good sending.

Try it

Build a list of 25 companies where you can name the specific trigger and the specific person. Twenty-five is deliberately small — if you cannot find 25, your market definition is the problem, not your outreach.
