Landing pages that convert

Lesson 8 of 8 · 7 min

What to test first

Once a page is live, opinions multiply. Testing is how you settle them, but most small businesses test the wrong things and draw confident conclusions from too little data.

Test big things, in this order

  • The offer itself — what you promise beats every wording change.
  • The headline and the audience it names.
  • The call to action and the size of the step it asks for.
  • Page structure and what appears above the fold.
  • Colors, button shapes, and micro-copy — last, and honestly optional.

Be honest about traffic

Split testing needs real volume to say anything. With a few hundred visitors a month you will never reach significance, and chasing it wastes time you could spend talking to customers. At low traffic, prefer sequential changes plus qualitative evidence: session recordings, five user tests, and asking buyers what nearly stopped them.

Try it

Pick the single biggest change you have been arguing about, ship it for two weeks, and write down in advance what result would make you keep it. Deciding the threshold before you see the data is what keeps you honest.
