When a negotiation is stuck, it is usually because both sides have collapsed a many-variable deal into one number. Widening the conversation is how stuck deals get unstuck, and it often produces a better outcome than winning on price would have.
Variables worth more than a discount
- Payment terms: a 50% deposit is worth real money to a business financing itself.
- Scope: the honest lever. Less work for less money keeps your rate intact.
- Timeline: a flexible deadline lets you fill quiet weeks instead of overtime.
- Term length: a longer commitment justifies a lower monthly rate.
- Rights and referrals: case studies, logo usage, an introduction to two peers.
- Exclusivity, renewal terms, and who owns what at the end.
For a service business, payment terms often matter more than price. Winning $20,000 paid in ninety days can be worse than $17,000 paid half up front, because the first one you may have to finance out of your own pocket.
The move is to ask what matters most to them among these, and to know in advance which ones you would trade cheaply. Rank yours before the call.
Try it
Rank the six variables above by what they are worth to you. Then, in your next negotiation, ask the other side to name their top two. Deals get made in the gap between those rankings.
