Negotiation

Lesson 1 of 8 · 7 min

Leverage is your alternative

Your leverage in any negotiation is not confidence, charm, or preparation. It is the quality of what you will do if this deal does not happen. Everything else is technique layered on top of that.

Negotiators call it your BATNA — best alternative to a negotiated agreement. A freelancer with three other prospects negotiates differently from one with rent due and no pipeline, and both are obvious to the other side within minutes.

You improve leverage before the conversation, not during it

  • Add one more real option, even a worse one. Two options is a choice; one is a hostage situation.
  • Reduce what you need from this specific deal — smaller scope, faster payment, shorter term.
  • Know the number below which you would genuinely rather walk. Decide it while calm.
  • Estimate their alternative too. A buyer who has been searching for three months has less leverage than they are performing.

Desperation leaks. It shows up as over-explaining, as discounting before being asked, as answering emails within seconds. Fixing the underlying position fixes the tells far better than trying to hide them.

Try it

For your next negotiation, write down your actual alternative in one sentence, then write one thing you could do this week to make it better. Do that thing before the conversation.
