Lesson 5 of 8 · 8 min

Trade, never concede

A concession is something you hand over for free. A trade is something you exchange. Concessions do not buy goodwill — they teach the other side that pushing works, so the pushing continues.

The shape of a trade

Always phrase movement as conditional: "If you can do X, I can do Y." Said that way, a discount stops being a loss and becomes a purchase — you are buying a faster payment, a longer term, a case study, or a smaller scope.

  • Price down, deposit up.
  • Price down, timeline relaxed so it fills a gap in your schedule.
  • Price down, scope cut. This is the honest one, and the easiest to explain.
  • Price held, extra included. Cheaper for you than cutting price if the extra is low-cost.

Shrink your steps

Concession sizes signal where you will end. Moving $5,000, then $5,000 again tells them another $5,000 is available. Moving $5,000, then $1,500, then $400 signals you are approaching a floor, and it is the pattern experienced negotiators read.

Try it

List five things you could ask for that cost the buyer little: faster payment terms, a testimonial, an intro, a longer commitment, a flexible deadline. Those are your currency next time price comes up.
