Measuring in customers, not rankings

It is easy to feel successful in SEO while making no money. Rankings improve, traffic climbs, and the phone does not ring. The fix is measuring the right things from the start.

What to actually track

  • Leads and sales from organic, which is the only number that pays anyone.
  • Rankings for your money terms — the ten that would produce customers, not a list of two hundred.
  • Clicks and impressions in Search Console, especially per page.
  • Conversion rate of organic traffic, which tells you whether you are attracting the right people.

Traffic without conversion is a diagnosis

Rising traffic with flat leads usually means you are ranking for informational terms far from purchase. That is not failure, but it is a signal to rebalance toward commercial pages rather than to celebrate the chart.

Be patient on the right timescale

Meaningful movement takes months, so judge quarterly, not weekly. Checking rankings daily is a way to feel busy and to make impulsive changes that undo work still in progress.

Know when to stop

If after a year of honest effort — good pages, working technicals, some links — organic produces almost no qualified enquiries, it is reasonable to conclude this is not your channel and move the time into something that works. That is a legitimate outcome, not a personal failure, and knowing it early is worth more than another six months of hope.

Try it

Set up conversion tracking for organic traffic specifically, then write down the four numbers above as they stand today. That is your baseline for a quarterly review.
